DEFENCE MATERIAL ASSURANCE

Material Selection

Assessing materials for compliance within the MOD landscape, from design through procurement.
WHY THIS MATTERS

The cheapest point to get a material decision right is the first one.

A material choice made at design or specification stage carries consequences for the life of the programme. A material that is later restricted, added to the SVHC Candidate List, or withdrawn by a supplier can force a costly, disruptive redesign well after the original decision has been built upon.

The Ministry of Defence landscape adds its own layer to this: Defence Standards and policies such as JSP 418 Leaflet 5 sit alongside REACH, CLP and RoHS, and a material assessment needs to account for both at once.

WHAT WE DO

Screening materials before they are designed in.

We assess proposed materials against the full regulatory and policy picture, not just the rule that is easiest to check.

1
Material and substance screening
Screening proposed materials and substances at the design or specification stage, before they are committed to.
2
Regulatory and standards check
Checking proposed materials against current REACH, RoHS and POPs restrictions, alongside applicable Defence Standards.
3
Safer alternative assessment
Where a material carries elevated regulatory risk, assessing whether a safer alternative is viable without compromising performance.
4
Material approval support
Supporting material approval processes with the technical justification and evidence records they require.
HOW WE HELP

Decisions that hold up over the programme lifecycle.

We help you choose materials with the direction of regulatory travel in mind, not just today’s rules, so the decision still holds several years into the programme.

Material and substance screening at design and specification stage
Assessment against current REACH, RoHS, POPs and Defence Standards together
Safer-alternative analysis where a material carries elevated risk
Technical justification records to support material approval processes
A defensible position that reduces the risk of costly late-stage redesign
