What Good Communication in the Supply Chain Looks Like

Most of the compliance gaps we see don’t come from a business ignoring its obligations — they come from information not moving properly through the supply chain. A supplier who doesn’t flag a substance change, a customer request that sits unanswered, an SDS that hasn’t been updated since the last Candidate List revision. Individually minor, collectively a real exposure. Here’s what good supply chain communication actually looks like in practice.

Proactive, not just reactive

Reactive compliance means waiting for a customer to ask “does this contain any SVHCs?” and then scrambling to find out. Good practice means already knowing the answer, and telling customers before they have to ask. That shift — from responding to requests to getting ahead of them — is the single biggest difference between businesses that handle supply chain communication well and those that don’t.

Specific, not blanket

“This product is REACH compliant” is not a useful statement to receive or to give. It doesn’t say which substances are present, at what concentration, or against which version of the Candidate List it was checked. Useful supply chain communication is specific: substance names, CAS or EC numbers where relevant, concentrations against the 0.1% w/w threshold, and the date or Candidate List version the check was made against.

How we can help

We help clients build supply chain communication that actually holds up — clear declaration templates, a live substance inventory tied to current lists, and a process for responding to customer requests before they become a fire drill.
